He has provided students, summer after summer, with an exemplary acting class experience. For a good many years, particularly in seasons that he has not appeared on stage here, he has been working with us behind-the-scenes as one of the most respected faculty members of our Summer Professional Training Program. Over the years, he has appeared in The Tempest twice – first as Ariel and then as Prospero in 2009 at our Outdoor Stage, A Midsummer Night’s Dream, Henry IV, Part One (playing Prince Hal in our 1992 production!), Pericles and Timon of Athens. Benard has been a dear friend and member of the company ever since that first production together in 1991. He is scantily dressed because he was playing the other-worldly Ariel in my (Bonnie’s) first show ever here at The Shakespeare Theatre. It shows him on a break from a tech rehearsal, lounging in the front row of seats in the old Bowne Theatre, and he is practicing a song on a recorder.

Each day of this year, from this first day of rehearsal for the first show of the season, to the last day of our final show, we will highlight one of our company artists and their specific achievements here at The Shakespeare Theatre of New Jersey. “The best actors in the world, either for tragedy, comedy, history, pastoral, pastoral-comical, historical-pastoral, tragical-historical, tragical-comical-historical-pastoral, scene individable, or poem unlimited.”ĭuring this milestone 50th anniversary season, we will celebrate many achievements, past and present, and honor many of the people and organizations who have helped us reach this landmark in our history but no group of people deserves a warmer spotlight than our extraordinary family of artists, who over the years, have been the primary purveyors of the great works of literature that we bring to life each season.
